The Statto Chateau #1 – 31st Aug ’10
Bit of a new feature here, I’ll be researching all things Dale every few weeks or so to give you some interesting statistics and bits of trivia. (Who says I don’t have a life?). If you have any odd bits of Dale related fluff you think might interest me or the few hardy souls that visit this website, give us a bell at ‘boothman at gmail dot com’ and I’ll feature it, with your name, in the next edition.
Openers. Rochdale have accumulated five points from four league games this season; compared with four from four last time around. However, after losing to Rotherham on 23rd August ’09, Dale went on a six match unbeaten run starting with the 3-0 thrashing of Bury.
Sparsity. Previous to the first four games of this campaign, the only other time Marcus Holness started four consecutive league games was way back in 2007, starting with a 1-0 win over Dagenham on 3rd November ’07. His defensive partners that day were Tom Kennedy, Rory McArdle and Kelvin Lomax.
Jonah’s braces. Until he scored two against Birmingham last week, adding to his previous two against Brighton, Gary Jones had never scored two braces in a single season, for Rochdale or indeed any League club.
Endurance. Josh Lillis, Scott Wiseman and Brian Barry-Murphy are the only three players to play every single minute of the season so far.
French Connections. Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro became our first fully foreign player to start a game (disregarding dual nationalities) since French loanee William Mocquet played on a New Year’s Day ’07 victory against Grimsby away. Interestingly, the week before he played and scored in a 4-0 win over a Boston United side that featured both Anthony Elding and Jason Kennedy. (Marcus Magna, another Frenchman, played two games last season, but only featured as a sub and did not start either match.)
Giving it both barrels. Prior to Brian Barry-Murphy, the last time anyone played for Dale with a double barrelled name was striker Clive Moyo-Modise, in a 2-2 draw against Wrexham on Boxing Day 2006. CMM is now plying his trade for Altrincham of the Football Conference.
Bullseye. The last player to make fifty or more starts in a season was Tom Kennedy in 08/09 with 53 apps. TK started 132 games for Dale in just three seasons at an average of 49.3 games per season. Gary Jones managed 50 in 07/08. In 06/07, Matt Gilks and Alan Goodall both reached that milestone (51 and 50 games respectively). Alan Goodall started his first game since his return tonight against Port Vale in the Johnstones’ Paint Pot.
…And I’ll leave with you this morsel of superfluous information.
The three amigos. Ten years ago yesterday, both Gary Jones and Dave Flitcroft played in a home defeat by Plymouth Argyle, and Keith Hill was named on the bench. The last time Rochdale was not the employer of any one of those three men was 2nd August 1996, the day before Keith Hill signed from, you guessed it, Plymouth Argyle. That’s 14 years of constant involvement by either Hill, Flitcroft or Jones… or like now, (and like ten years ago), all three.
Hardly any effort has been made to ensure the information on this page is correct. If you spot any errors, please write a comment below and I’ll do my best to correct the offending statistic.
